Multicultural Memento wants to raise curiosity, bring up a social discussion about interculturalism, integration, inclusion and social cohesion, while stimulating the senses through a culinary experience.
What is representing a country’s tradition and how unique is it? Where do we draw lines? Can we draw lines?
22% of The Netherlands total population has a foreign background, this results in Dutch cities being full of cultural diversity, which adds a value to the city landscapes, but is not always reflected in certain areas. This results in a sense of lack of belonging for these immigrant cultures and debates the whole collective identity of a place.
These Stroopwafels incorporate spices that are commonly used in countries that have a strong historical or contemporary connection with the Netherlands, in an attempt to create a Dutch souvenir that embraces diversity and expresses the multiculturalism that is present in Dutch cities.
Multicultural memento was born as a souvenir box containing 12 Stroopwafels, 3 per country. The countries and flavors involved in the project are: Indonesia with cloves, Suriname with ginger, and Turkey with black pepper.

Multicultural Memento was developed as continuation of a line a multicultural souvenirs called To Kiss or not to Kiss. To kiss or not to kiss is a project that reinterprets the “Dutch Kissing Couple” in its Delft Blue version into 10 new souvenir kissing couples from different cultural backgrounds.
